Organic Snacks for Children

Organic snacks for children are an important part of an organic meal plan. Children need to eat more often because of their fast growth.

Conventional Snacks

For many years, the standard snack for children was a commercially produced product made from sugar and bleached white flour. As time went on, high fructose corn syrup and other substances were added.

Children's smaller bodies and less effective immune systems are affected more by the toxins in non-organic foods than an adult's body would be. It is important to be even more vigilant about what your children are eating than you would be about your own diet. Some additives and substances you want to shy away from in your child's snacks are:

  • Artificial color
  • Artificial flavor
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Hydrogenated oils
  • GMO's /Genetically Modified Organisms
  • MSG
  • Transfats
  • Preservatives
  • Excessive amounts of sugar
  • Excessive amounts of salt

In order for an item to be certified organic, it can't contain the ingredients listed above. Only organic ingredients can be used. Be careful though. Too much sugar is unhealthy, whether it is organic sugar or not.

Healthiest Organic Snacks for Children

Probably the easiest and healthiest organic snacks are simply fresh organic fruits and vegetables. While these items are often overlooked as being boring, they provide plenty of flavor, color, and nutrition. You can easily make fresh produce more appealing to your children.

  • Add a spoonful of organic peanut butter next to slices of apple or carrot sticks. It makes a great dip.
  • Cut fruit on toothpicks and organic vanilla yogurt to dip it into.
  • Serve celery with organic hummus dip.
  • Frozen grapes are a wonderful treat for older children.
  • Toss frozen bananas in a blender and add a bit of honey and you will have a treat that is very similar to soft serve ice cream.

Homemade Snacks

If you have a little more time, it isn't difficult to make healthy, inexpensive snacks. As long as you use organic ingredients you will have an organic product. Some snacks to consider are:

  • Muffins
  • Cookies
  • Snack cakes (you can even find organic cake mixes)
  • Trail mix

Commercially Available Organic Snacks

Sometimes you just want something to toss into a school lunchbox or have a snack that transports easily. It is helpful, too, because many children get embarrassed when their healthy food looks different than their friends' store bought snacks. Most anything you can buy in a conventional version is also available in an organic version. They are just as portable and cool. In fact, manufacturers of organic products have begun to recognize that consumers want organic products that are similar in appeal to the conventional ones.Items to consider are:

Many conventional grocery stores have begun to carry organic snacks. Sometimes they are in the same section as the other snack and sometimes they are in a special area. If you can't find what you are looking for be sure to ask. If the store doesn't currently carry organics they may be willing to start if enough customers ask.You can also find organic snacks for children in your local health food store or natural foods store. Some chains that you may find in your area are:
