Comfrey is one plant that wears many hats, both in the garden and out. It plays an important role in creating sustainable organic farming, and it has a long historical tradition as a wonder drug.

What is Comfrey

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a hardy perennial in the family Boraginaceae. It is related to forget-me-not and borage, another useful herb. Also known as blackwort, knitbone, boneset and slippery root, the roots and leaves of comfrey have been used in herbal medicine for hundreds of years. Nicholas Culpepper's Complete Herbal, published in 1653, recommends comfrey for internal and external use to treat such widely differing conditions as gout, broken bones, lung ailments and gangrene. Although comfrey has been taken internally as a tea, it is not currently recommended for internal use, but it is still used topically to treat a number of conditions.

Comfrey's most well known modern medical use is as a topical treatment for sprains and breaks. A digital subtraction radiography study conducted by the Barretos Educational Foundation using rats observed increase bone density during initial bone healing using comfrey. Comfrey is also used to help heal burns, cuts and bruises.

Growing Comfrey

Comfrey grows well under most conditions. It will reach three feet in height and comfrey plants will spread up to about three feet. Although comfrey likes nitrogen rich soil and good light, it will tolerate less than ideal conditions and grow in poor soil and even partial shade. It can be propagated from seed or root cuttings and is considered quite invasive. New plants will start readily from young root tips.

Organic Importance of Comfrey

An important organic crop, comfrey is green manure, and can be planted in spent soil to help add back much needed nutrients, like nitrogen and potassium. A favorite in permaculture design, growing comfrey is an organic way to increase soil fertility naturally.

These characteristics help to make comfrey a natural agent that can revitalize and work soil without much human intervention or chemical help. Comfrey can be grown and turned under or applied as a liquid fertilizer.

Whether it's used as a cover crop, as a mulch or in the compost pile, comfrey will have multiple, positive uses in the garden. In fact, comfrey also makes an excellent organic insecticide.
