Hello all,

I am looking for a chinese company who can do it all for me. Supply organic bamboo fabric and also manufacture my simple clothing product?

any info or places to search would be a big help. i have done a few google searches of course but have not found anything accredited.

cheers, Daniel

Michael,

We don't actually make fabric, but yes, you are right, if the process of making the fabric involves chemicals then it's not organic. There are some true organic processors out there, but it can be a little tricky to find them.

Any of the companies mentioned above produce organic bamboo fabric--Bamboo Fabric Store would be your best bet if you're looking for actual fabric to sew.

I have read that bamboo is processed into fibre using various hash chemicals, where do I find manufactures that do not use such chemicals and have organic accreditation through a repretable orgainc organisation?

I would like to see this material available in the fabric stores/

From what I've read, it's pretty easy to dye, and given the wide range of colors available in bamboo yarn, I believe that. If you go to the Bamboo Fabric Store website and look in their FAQs, you can see some samples comparing bamboo to cotton for dyeing purposes.

How easy is it to dye bamboo fabric

That's a really good question, Ariel. I can't find any information on how much acreage it takes to make a certain amount of bamboo fiber. But bamboo plants don't need to be spaced like cotton plants do, so even if it takes more plants to produce the same amount of fiber, it may be more efficient from a land use standpoint, and it certainly is from the point of view of not using chemicals to grow it.

It seems that bamboo fabrics are a great potential for the manufacture of sustainable clothing...however, What is the cost efficiency for bamboo fabrics? I mean Cotton Inc. states that "1 acre of cotton produces 800lbs of fabric"...so How many pounds of raw bamboo does it take to make 1 ton of bamboo fabric?

Rob is right. But on the other hand, that is a lot less damage done then the damage that cotton is causing the world. And because of them cutting those trees down, the bamboo is giving us more oxygen.

I recently went to a Magic show (a textile show in L.A.) where I learned that bamboo is not considered to be a sustainable resource because of the way the fiber is turned into threads which are then woven into fabric.

Interested in this new fabric. Sounds great. Any downside to it?

That is not true that no forests are harmed to grow bamboo. Due to its current popularity, many Chinese farms are expanding into areas where forests have been cut down.
