Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Food

From LoveToKnow Organic

Sustainable agriculture and organic food go hand-in-hand for many people. Organic farming methods are more sustainable because they limit the use of chemicals by using organic fertilizer and pest and weed control methods.

Sustainability is a big issue for organic farmers.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the idea that people’s actions have consequences. It is the belief that we choose to do should be that which is the best both for people and the planet for the foreseeable future.

It has to do with thinking about how today’s choices will affect the world of tomorrow, not just environmentally but also socially and economically. It asks us to consider the impact on future generations of people as well as animals and the ecosystem of the world around us.

About Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Food

When it comes to sustainable agriculture and organic food, the majority of what you’re talking about is environmental. Choosing organic production methods is better for the planet and the people who live near organic farms.

It’s better for the animals who live on the farm because the food source of insects isn’t eliminated and the ecosystem is in good shape. Not using genetically modified grain or seeds is another aspect of sustainability: growing plants that nature intended in a way that is healthier for the planet.

The soil in organic farms is healthier, which means more organisms can live there. This makes the plants healthier because the insects keep the soil aerated and are constantly adding organic material. Healthier plants make better vegetables and fruits for people to eat. This cycle is exactly what sustainability is all about.

But there is also some social and economic factor involved in sustainability when it comes to organic foods. Farmers make more money for their products when they are organically grown, because they can charge more in the marketplace for them. They may save money by not buying chemicals to spray on their crops.

Of course, this brings up another social and economic aspect. How can poor people can be given better access to organic foods? The organic food movement tends to include aspects of social justice and fair trade, so it is likely that this issue of access will become more important as time goes on.

Some states have programs that allow food stamps to be used at farmer’s markets. This is a great way to get more organic food into the hands of poorer people when there is a local market nearby.

Sustainability Matters

Sustainability is not a political issue. It doesn’t have anything to do with global warming; it is simply an acknowledgment that what people do has actions for generations to come. The more we are mindful of that truth and make decisions that are both good for us and good for the future, the better off we, the planet, and our future generations will be.

Sustainable agriculture and organic food takes into consideration the condition of the land, methods other than chemicals for weed and pest control, even issues like infrastructure in rural areas, how to get food to market, conservation, children’s health, the potential for contamination and much more.

A sustainable approach to agriculture is really an approach that considers the health of people and the planet as well as the amount of produce the land can yield. Organic farmers are in business, so the economics are not ignored, but all these other issues are also considered important.

All farmers want to be good stewards of the land, because it is the land that gives them their livelihood and allows all of us to eat so well. As more and more people begin to see the benefits of organic food, organics will gain a bigger market share, become more inexpensive and be more widely available so more people can buy and enjoy organic foods. That’s sustainability everyone can be happy with.
