Lawn Fertilizer

Many people don't spend a lot of time thinking about fertilizing their lawns. As long as the grass is green and somewhat healthy looking, they tend to leave it alone.

But it is a good idea to fertilize regularly to keep your lawn, and the soil it grows in, healthy. Plants do a pretty good job of pulling nutrients from the soil or from air and water, so there are many nutrients your grass needs that you don't have to provide. There are 18 different nutrients required for proper plant growth:

  • Carbon
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Nitrogen
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium
  • Sulfur
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Boron
  • Molybdenum
  • Copper
  • zinc
  • Chlorine
  • Cobalt
  • Nickel

Most of these a plant like grass can get from soil solids or from the air and water. But plants need more nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium than is readily available in the air and water, which is where a product like Ringer Lawn Restore organic fertilizer comes in.

How Fertilizer Helps

A lawn with the right amount of nitrogen is lush and green. With too little nitrogen, plants grow slowly and are often yellow and not as thick as usual, allowing more weeds to grow.

Lack of nitrogen might also make it easier for some diseases to attack your lawn. On the other hand, too much nitrogen leads to excessive leaf growth with reduced root growth, and makes it harder for the plants to deal with environmental stress.

Phosphorus is beneficial for the early growth of plants, and it aids root growth. Some places (including the state of Minnesota) have regulations on the use of phosphorus fertilizer, so check locally before you apply.

Phosphorus can leach out of soil and contaminate water, leading to decreased water quality and harming the creatures that live in the water.

Potassium is good for your lawn because it helps regulate processes in the plant, including making its use of nitrogen more efficient. A potassium deficiency may lead to increased disease and susceptibility to environmental stress.

Using Ringer Lawn Restore Organic Fertilizer

Ringer Lawn Restore is a 10-2-6 (that's the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, respectively) blend that is a good choice for established lawns that need a boost.

It contains all natural ingredients including poultry feather meal, nitrate of soda, potassium sulfide, bone meal and soybean meal. It has been approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute and is made without manure or any chemical ingredients.

It comes in a pelleted form that is easy to apply and will not burn the lawn. One bag covers 2,500 square feet at a rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet. The fertilizer should be applied with a spreader two or three times a year.

Water the lawn after applying fertilizer, and keep it moist for three or four days after application.

More Lawn Care Tips

If you're working to bring a lawn back from an unhealthy state, you might find that it needs more nitrogen than Ringer Lawn Restore organic fertilizer can provide. Get your soil tested and follow the recommended fertilization schedule.

Lawns need a lot of water to look their best, so water yours weekly if you want a lush green yard. It takes three or four hours for a sprinkler to deliver an inch of water to the soil, which is what it should be getting regularly.

Grass needs to be cut regularly for optimum growth, but only about a third of the stalk should be removed at a time to keep the plant from getting too stressed. In the summer you might want to let your grass grow a little longer because the plant is naturally more stressed at this time than it is in the spring or fall.

Following these tips and using the right organic fertilizer will give you a lawn to be proud of without hurting Mother Nature in the process..

Thanks for the report, Fred! Glad to hear it's worked for you.

This product does what it says it will do! I started with a newly constructed home last September that had bare clay for a yard. Since then, I have only used turf-type tall fescue grass seed and this product on my yard, and my yard is now covered by a thick lush stand of grass that is the envy of the neighborhood. It is available nationally online from Do It Best Hardware and can be shipped free of charge to a local store.

Try Roots Garden Supply. I'm not positive they have it, but they are a big organic supplier in the Portland area.
