Retailers Who Sell Organic Clothing
From LoveToKnow Organic
If you are looking for good quality clothes that are created in a natural and sustainable fashion, then retailers who sell organic clothing might just be worth checking out.
If organic clothes conjure up an image of scratchy hair shirts or badly knitted handspun wool sweaters, then it is time to think again! As the organic movement has taken hold the number of stores which sell organic clothing increased. This increase in the number of stores means that there is an increased choice, making the range of organic clothing available such that there is now something for everyone from organic underclothes to organic cotton wedding dresses and organic maternity clothing.
What is Organic Clothing?
Organic clothing is simply clothes that have been produced and manufactured to meet high organic standards. This means that the raw material such as cotton, hemp or wool has been grown without the use of chemicals such as pesticides and harsh fertilizers. When the raw materials are processed into fabric, again high organic production standards are followed. This means that the process is energy efficient as well as environmentally friendly.
If organic fabric is dyed then the process of coloring the material will also meet high organic standards. Many designers, however, enjoy using the natural colors of organic fibers. Organic materials are rarely pure white as this entails bleaching the fabric. Therefore common natural colors include rich creams and deep fawns and beiges.
Many textiles used in the production of clothes can be created organically. Some of the most common organic fabrics include:
- Cotton
- Hemp
- Linen
- Wool
- Bamboo
Finding Retailers Who Sell Organic Clothing
Many retailers sell at least a small amount of organic clothing and this is rapidly increasing. Additionally there are special retailers who sell organic clothing exclusively. The best way to find a local retailer is to look in a directory or to ask in whole foods or natural living stores. The Internet also presents a great way to find specialist retailers.
In addition to 'bricks and mortar' stores selling organic clothing, many interesting products can be found online. The range of stores varies from stores who specialize in a single type of organic clothing, for instance baby clothing, through stores that sell organic clothing as an addition to their main range. Some interesting stores to look at include:
- Cottonfield USA – this website features an online store where customers can buy from a wide range of organic cotton clothing. There is also a store locater that makes it easy to find a local store if you prefer to see items before buying.
- The Oko Box – this store sells a range of high fashion items which prove that organic and environmentally friendly clothing needn’t be boring!
- Lotus Organics – offers a range of clothes including clothes suitable for yoga. The store also has fixed price shipping throughout the US.
- Butterfly Maidens – clothes for women and children. The range includes products that are dyed using a natural water based dye that is purported not to fade.
Alternatives to Organic Clothing
While organic clothing is a very environmentally friendly option, there are other alternatives that might be of interest to an organic shopper. These include clothing that is made from recycled materials. While clothing made using recycled materials is unlikely to be organic, it will be very environmentally friendly. An interesting option is clothing that is created from a mix of organic and recycled materials. This is a good way to use fabrics that would otherwise be discarded to landfill and also reduces the amount of virgin materials that are required.
Organic clothing is both fashionable and kind to the environment. The range of clothing is continually developing and there is a choice of exciting clothing for every member of the family..

Sorry you were disappointed Jess. Most brick and mortar stores do not sell organic exclusively. for local shopping the yellow pages and a few phone calls are still the best way to go.
