Organic Yogurt Chips
From LoveToKnow Organic
Organic yogurt chips are a wonderful treat for kids and adults alike. These sweet little chips are a great addition to trail mix or granola or make a good after school snack. While not exactly health food, some are better for you than others, and may even include dried fruit.
What is a Yogurt Chip?
Yogurt chips are just what they sound like they are—little bits of yogurt molded into a chip shape and dried. You can also find yogurt chips that involve something else dipped in yogurt and dried, most often banana chips.
Yogurt chips that are not organic are often sold as candy, and with good reason. They are full of sugar (often high-fructose corn syrup). They often include chocolate for even more sugar and fat, and are relatively high in fat and calories for such a small snack.
Choosing organic yogurt chips might not improve the nutritional profile much (other than getting rid of the corn syrup), but at least you can rest assured that you're putting a better quality product into your body than you would be otherwise.
Finding Organic Yogurt Chips
Yogurt chips are found in a lot of prepared granolas and trail mixes, which you will find on the breakfast aisle of your local organic food stores, or you can order them online.
Your best bet for finding organic yogurt chips that have not already been mixed into something else is on the baking aisle or, even better, in the bulk food section of your local market.
Here you will likely be able to find plain yogurt chips, as well as banana chips, pretzels and other treats dipped in yogurt.
Always check the ingredients list, if one is available, or ask someone who works at the store if the product is made with organic ingredients. Choose products that have a good turnaround time and smell fresh. Your best bet will be buying from a bin that's high enough off the ground that children can't reach in, if possible.
The bulk section at your local natural food store is a treasure trove of natural and organic ingredients offered at great prices. If you have a favorite local store, get to know the manager of bulk foods and make requests for any products you don't see that you would like to try. Most people who work at natural food stores are happy to educate their customers and to provide them with the products they want to try.
There are some online sources for bulk foods like yogurt chips. Try, for example, Brownville Mills, based in Nebraska.
Using Yogurt Chips
Again, yogurt chips can't really be considered a health food, but they are a nice sweet treat for times when you need a little something but don't want to be completely bad. They are a great addition to trail mix because of the fat provided by the milk.
If you want to make a yogurt parfait while traveling, use yogurt chips instead of real yogurt for that sweet and tangy taste. Or just eat them by themselves.
Yogurt used to cover other snackers like dried fruit or pretzels is another good choice for a snack. Yogurt chips are relatively inexpensive (for an organic snack food) and are easy to transport and pack in your backpack. They can get a little melty in the heat of the summer, however, so you might want to freeze yours before going out on a trek in the summertime.
Yogurt chips are a good choice for a special snack for kids and adults on days when you need to bring a little sweetness into your life. Choosing organic snacks means that you're getting better ingredients and perhaps even a healthier snack when you buy organics instead of the conventionally produced products. And there's certainly something that's less guilt-inducing when you know your indulgence hasn't done anything to harm the planet.

-- Contributed by: Marye AudetThe information about organic yogurt chips is well written. Unfortunately organic yogurt chips are not available online or in the stores listed. I gave up calling after the 8th store. If you can list an actual store that sells them, it would be appreciated. Thanks!
