Organic Vegetables

From LoveToKnow Organic

Organic vegetables are the staple of an organic diet. Today's commercial produce contains an abundance of chemical pesticides, many of which are toxic and/or known carcinogens. The goal of organic farmers is to provide the American consumer with food that is safe and packed with flavor while utilizing farming methods that are not harmful to the environment.

Organic vegetables are a staple of a healthy diet.

What Does "Organic" Mean?

Organic vegetables and any supermarket item that is labeled "organic" imply that the products have been produced under organic standards. These standards must be met in order for the manufacturer to be certifiably organic.

What do these standards entail? Organic products are grown on organic farms that implement farming methods that are both considerate of the soil and the environment. These farming principles also work to lessen any chance of product contamination while maintaining a high quality of food.

Any organic agriculture is farmed with a holistic picture of the environment. Organic farming takes into account the well-being of the ecosystem as well as the soil's biological activity. Organic vegetables are farmed without the use of chemical pesticides and artificial ingredients that are detrimental to the soil and farm ecology.

Any type of organic produce must be farmed without:

  • Synthetic fertilizers
  • Genetic engineering
  • Irradiation
  • Pesticides

No GMOs

The term "GMO" refers to genetically modified crops. These unnatural crops are rampant in supermarkets. Genetically modified crops may create larger bushels of wheat and very plump looking oranges, but they are quite a scourge to the world of agriculture. Unnaturally combined genes are not all that easy to contain, especially when open air trials have already taken place in 14 US states. Transgenic contamination is a real problem in the agricultural industry and has cost the United States approximately $12 billion in farm subsidies.

More importantly, these GMOs have not been proven to be safe for consumption. Very few studies have taken place, but one investigation regarding GMOs yielded some remarkable growth factor-like effects in the digestive tracts of young rats. Dangerous gene products are involved in the genetic modification of plants, and many of these altered products are used to create several pharmaceuticals and drugs, including cytokines. Cytokines are known immune suppressants as well as central nervous system toxins; they can cause conditions such as dementia, neurotoxicity, as well as produce mood and cognitive changes. There are also some suspicions that the transgenic DNA in good is taken up by human intestinal bacteria, even naturally occurring pathogenic bacteria, which can, in turn, lead to very difficult to treat infections.

Organic vegetables do not include GMOs, and consumers buying any organic produce are most likely choosing a safer route.

The Taste of Organic Vegetables

If anything, let your reason for purchasing organic vegetables be the intense taste of these flavorful foods. Pesticide and chemical residues can considerably dull the taste of vegetables. Hence, organic food fans will immediately notice the difference in flavor between conventionally grown produce and vegetables that are naturally farmed. Because organic farmers implement crop rotation policies, the soil on organic farms is still rich in natural minerals and nutrients which, of course, enter the plants that are grown.

Price Considerations

Organic agriculture can easily be purchased at your local health or organic food store. However, some consumers are wary of purchasing organic produce due to the price considerations.

Yes, organic vegetables can be sometimes twice as expensive as commercial vegetables. However, conventionally grown foods contain hidden costs such as pesticide regulation, toxic waste testing and disposal, and all sorts of measures created to balance the hazardous toxins created by these foods. The costs of this dangerous industry (not even including medical expenditures incurred by the consumer who ingests these toxins) undoubtedly exceed that of a lifetime of one buyer's organic food consumption.
