Organic Salves

From LoveToKnow Organic

If you have been looking for creams that can help relieve burns, itching or other dermatological problems, or that can help improve your overall health, consider buying organic salves. The term salve is a rather broad one that describes pretty much any treatment that is meant to soothe or relieve irritation. Organic, in this context, means containing only naturally derived ingredients and no excess chemicals or pesticides.

Lavender is a popular salve ingredient.

Types of Organic Salves

One good way to search for organic salves is by symptom, since different salves have different purposes.

Muscle Salves

The purpose of muscle salves is to provide temporary relief of aches and pains, especially due to sports injuries and arthritis. These salves give the skin a tingling sensation as they are absorbed.

  • Arnica Muscle Salve is made from comfrey, seje oil and ginger to warm and soothe the skin at the same time. Vegans should take note that it contains beeswax as its base.
  • Merry Hempsters Vegan Salve is a heating balm made from hemp seed oil. It also contains menthol crystals, vitamin E and several essential oils. It comes in a stick applicator for portability.
  • Brew City Botanicals is vegan and biodegradable. It is useful both for muscle soreness and to help heal bruises.
  • Taylor Made Herbs & Aromatherapy makes a cayenne salve that is meant to heat the skin and increase circulation during cold weather.

Skin Salves

These salves, sometimes known as body butters, are designed to heal dry skin, whether it is due to generally dryness or problems such as diaper rash and eczema.

  • Progressive Doctor Soothing Salve is a beeswax-based salve with several herbal ingredients: organic lobelia, marshmallow root, mullein leaf, black walnut, skullcap, aloe, comfrey and calendula.
  • Lost River Naturals has a variety of organic skin salves, including generic healing salve, diaper rash salve, nipple salve for breastfeeding mothers and hemorrhoid salve.
  • Joshua Tree Climbing Salve is a salve made for active people. It’s useful for rubbing on cuts and is like an organic Neosporin.
  • Badger Healing Balm is a fairly well-known and highly rated salve. There are several types of Badger Balm for different purposes. All are good for treating dry skin without leaving a greasy residue behind.

Other Types

Other salves you can find are respiratory salves, such as Mama Elle’s Breathe Deep Salve, which can help relieve congestion and other cold symptoms; antiseptic salves, such as those containing tee tree oil, that work to prevent infection; and black salves, that are meant to burn away skin imperfections. You can find antiseptic salves at most drug stores. The best place to find black salves is at a licensed herbalist. They can be dangerous to use on your own without proper training.

Advantages of Organic Salves

One advantage of using organic salves, which are substantially different from traditional salves, often made of petroleum products, is that they usually smell a lot better. Consider it the difference between having the scent of lavender on your skin and having the smell of motor oil in your hands.

Another advantage is that people with allergies tend to be more tolerant of organic products. However, this does not mean that if you have sensitive skin you will not have an adverse reaction to these products. The best thing to do if you are concerned is to test each salve on a small patch of skin about the size of a dime for 24 hours to ensure that it is okay.

If you have a serious skin disorder, such as psoriasis, consult your doctor before using organic salves. If their use is permitted, your doctor may even have some favorite salves to recommend to you.
