Organic Pregnancy Diet

From LoveToKnow Organic

Follow an organic pregnancy diet in order to ensure your baby the healthiest, toxic-free nourishment available. Remember: Whatever you eat gets passed along to your baby, so start your baby's love of fresh, organic foods out early.

Optimum Development

There are two people who you need to take into consideration when making your menu choices while pregnant:

  • You: Pregnancy can be hard. There are additional physical demands on your body that may leave you tired and sluggish. You need to make sure that you are fueling your body with the best foods possible so you have the strength and fortitude to make it through the full nine months with as much energy as possible.
  • Your Baby: Pregnancy instantly makes you solely responsible for another human being. Your baby's body needs healthy nourishment in order to sustain the rapid development it will go through throughout the pregnancy. Properly nourishing your baby in utero will also potentially set the stage for optimum health after birth.

When you are pregnant, your body is working overtime to sustain your own needs while also working on the development of your baby. Your body is also preparing for lactation, which is another function that requires optimum nutrition.

Organic foods do not feature the same potential toxins, preservatives and artificial ingredients that many conventionally produced food items regularly contain. There are also no Genetically Modified Organisms {GMOs) in organic foods, so you do not have to worry about the unknown hazards these scientifically altered foods may present to you or to your developing baby.

Diet versus Dieting

Pregnancy is not a time to start a new diet that is designed solely for the purpose of losing weight. This is unhealthy and potentially dangerous to both the woman and the baby. The term "organic pregnancy diet" refers to eating organic foods while pregnant in an attempt to avoid dangerous toxins; it does not refer to a special diet consisting of organic foods that will allow a pregnant woman to lose a few pounds.

A healthy organic pregnancy diet gives your baby the best chance to develop and thrive while also providing you with the nutrients you need during this physically challenging time. It isn't designed to help you lose weight, although eating right while pregnant may help keep some of the unnecessary pounds at bay. Remember that pregnancy will always result in weight gain, but the trick is to gain the weight necessary for your baby's development while avoiding excess weight gain that will be difficult to shed after your baby's birth.

The Best Organic Pregnancy Diet

The best pregnancy diet will include a wide variety of foods. Organic fruits and vegetables should always be at the top of your grocery shopping list, but don't forget your other dietary needs. Far too many pregnant women become protein-deficient or iron-deficient during pregnancy because they do not eat the types of foods they need to sustain their health properly.

Why Organic?

While some of the toxins that are present in conventionally produced foods have been deemed safe for human consumption, any tests related to these toxins have been conducted using adult participants. Keep in mind the size of your developing baby's internal organs; the miniscule amounts of pesticides and preservatives that are present in the foods you eat aren't so miniscule when compared to the tiny organs trying to process the toxins.

Keep in mind that organic does not automatically translate into healthy. Eating a diet of organic desserts and organic potato chips isn't going to do much good for you or your baby. Even if you eat organic exclusively, you still need to vary the items in your diet to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients you need.

Eat an organic diet that consists of healthy, varied foods and you will be giving your baby the best chance of obtaining a palate for fresh, nourishing foods in the future.
