Organic Pesticide

From LoveToKnow Organic

Organic pesticide is nothing new. Farmers used natural pest controls for centuries; however, in recent decades these eco-friendly options were lost in the push for the "more effective" use of chemicals and the natural way of doing things was lost. Enough time has passed that people now realize chemical insecticides lose their effectiveness and not only kill the pests but also get rid of a number of beneficial insects. They also pose substantial health risks.

Benefits of Natural Pest Control

Organic insecticide products are mostly plant-based. These plants have been proven through time to repel or kill pests. For convenience you can grow many of these plants around your home. With this in mind, the first an obvious benefit of natural pesticides is that they come from nature. This makes them safe for the eco-system, plus they provide a cost-effective way to protect your garden from insects.

The result is that the food you grow is safer for people to eat.

Ingredients for Organic Pesticides Are Found in Your Cupboard

Many common items that you may have around the home can be used as organic pesticides. Bay leaf, for example, keeps weevils from flour and grain products, while basil naturally repels flies. Banana peels can stop a flea infestation, and washing your floor with vinegar repels ants.

Other items that you may have at home that can repel or kill ants are:

  • Chalk
  • Charcoal
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Damp coffee grounds

Garlic Spray

Garlic spray gets rid of cutworms, whiteflies, wireworms, and slugs.

Homemade Garlic Spray :

  • 1 bulb garlic
  • 1 quart water
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap

Run the garlic through a garlic press. Mince onion and add garlic and onion to the water. Add remaining ingredients except for the soap. Let the mixture steep for an hour. Add soap and your pesticide is ready to spray. It can be refrigerated for one week.

Tobacco Spray

This spray fights all kinds of bugs but is especially useful in controlling: aphids, caterpillars, and a variety of malicious worms. (CAUTION: Not to be used on eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, or other member of the solanaceous family. It can kill them.)

Homemade Tobacco Spray

  • 1 cup tobacco
  • 1 gallon water

Add tobacco to the water and let stand for approximately 24 hours. When ready, it should be about the color of weak tea. If it is stronger than that, add water until it's the right color.

Using Your Home Made Pesticide

Before you start spraying your homemade pesticide, it's important to remember that not all the insects in your garden are pests. In fact, some offer benefits to your garden, so before you decide on a pesticide identify the pest you want to get rid of and learn more about it.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What are its habits?
  • What is its life-cycle?

Answering these two questions will help you to determine the best treatment and give you the best time to apply it.

While organic pesticides are safe to use, it's important to note that not all of them are safe for every plant. Always read the instructions carefully and make note of exceptions. Remember, too, that even natural pesticides can be harmful to humans. Always wash any vegetable or fruit that has come in contact with any pesticide, natural or otherwise.

Pest Control Companies that Offer Organic Solutions

Pest control services around the country have also come to realize the value of offering an organic solution for eradicating pests. Check the yellow pages or search online for an Eco-Green or Eco-Friendly pest control service near you.

For the diligent gardener, using organic products reaps benefits of a safer environment so it is worth the extra effort. It does take extra work as most organic pesticides must be reapplied after rain or extreme heat, but it's well worth it.
