Organic Herbs Explained

In order for herbs to be designated as organic they must be tested and certified by a third-party organization that is allowed to grant organic status to items.

Some consumers prefer organic herbal remedies over other variations of herbs because the organic herbs – in theory – are generally exposed to fewer potential toxins such as pesticides and herbicides and are not genetically modified.

While organic farmers make every effort to limit the herb's exposure to pesticides and herbicides, in some cases the farmer may be granted special permission to utilize limited quantities of certain chemicals.

Suggested Uses for Organic Herbal Remedies

There are a wide variety of organic herbal remedies that are offered to treat many different ailments. Some herbal remedies are also designed as preventative, purportedly staving off certain illnesses and injuries.

Here is a brief list of common organic herbal remedies along with their suggested uses:

  • Echinacea: This plant has been praised as a great supplement to strengthen the immune system. Many people ingest this herb in pill form regularly in an attempt to avoid colds and other minor illnesses.
  • Garlic: Organic garlic supplements are widely available in many different forms. People who regularly take garlic pills or other forms of garlic do so in an attempt to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol, and as a decongestant.
  • Ginseng: Organic ginseng is supposed to offer a myriad of benefits including immune system support, increased stamina, and improved concentration levels.
  • St. John's Wort: Many people make the claim that this herb can help regulate moods and even assist people experiencing depression.
  • Noni Fruit: In drink form, this herb is offered as a means to speed up healing from a minor illness. As a lotion, this herb works as a moisturizer as well as a method to ease muscle aches and pains.

Ginger: Ginger has long been heralded as a natural remedy for nausea and morning sickness for pregnant women. Ginger is also reported to ease symptoms of colds.

  • Hemp Seed Oil: Many herbal experts claim that hemp seed oil can not only give people shiny hair and supple skin, but some believe that the oil derived from the herb can boost overall health.
  • Ginko Biloba: This herb is regarded as a memory aid as well as a remedy for poor blood circulation. This herb is also advertised as being a fantastic source of antioxidants.

This is merely a brief listing of the most common organic herbal supplements widely available. There is a wide variety of other organic herbs available in different forms including pills, pastes, powders, and more.

Using Organic Herbs as Remedies

People who choose organic herbs over non-organic herbs often do so because they want to have the purest herbs possible. They do not want to pollute their bodies with harmful toxins or unnatural chemicals and preservatives. What some people do not realize, however, is that just because a remedy is an herb occurring in nature and is organic it does not necessarily means that there is no chance of contraindications with other medicines.

Before adding any organic herbs to your regimen you should have a talk with your doctor or other medical professional to make sure that that the herbs complement the current medications you are taking. You may also be advised against certain herbs because of an existing medical condition. Remember that just because something is natural and organic does not mean that it will not have a detrimental effect on your body.

Buy Organic Herbs

Most health food stores carry organic herbal remedies, but as organics gain popularity these items are becoming available in traditional grocery stores as well. There are also plenty of retailers online selling organic herbs. Look for a certification on the label to ensure the herbs are indeed organic.
