Organic Bedding Bassinet
From LoveToKnow Organic
An organic bedding bassinet is a great addition to your baby's room. Organic baby bedding protects your little one from chemicals and gets him or her off to a healthy start.
What is an Organic Bedding Bassinet?
Bassinets, also sometimes spelled bassinettes, are small, basket-like beds used for babies from birth to about four months.
These little beds recreate a womb-like environment that is very comforting for a new baby. They also allow the baby to be carried from place to place while sleeping without having to be in a sling on a person's body all the time.
Using a bassinet can bring comfort to both parent and child because they are always within easy reach of each other. Use of the bassinet should be stopped as soon as baby is learning to roll, however, because he or she could easily tip out of the bassinet and get hurt.
Bassinets are usually made from wood, but organic bedding bassinets are made of more sustainable materials using organic methods.
Materials
An organic bedding bassinet is usually made of reeds or grasses woven into a basket shape with handles. The baskets typically can be lifted by the handles to transport when they are empty, but may not be able to support the weight of the basket with baby inside.
Always hold the basket on the sides rather than with the handles when baby is inside.
The materials used in the bassinet are organically produced and sustainable, meaning that the reeds and grasses grow back quickly after being harvested. This produces less strain on the planet and assures you you're making a healthy choice for your child.
Cushions
Your organic bedding bassinet will likely come with an organic mattress made of either organic wool, organic cotton, or a combination. Organic wool is a particularly good choice because it is naturally fire resistant.
It doesn't need any of the chemical flame retardants that are used in conventionally produced mattresses and bedding products. That means baby won't be exposed to those chemicals so early in life, which is a very good thing.
Bedding
To finish off your bassinet for baby, you might also want to include organic blankets or sheets. Swaddling baby up in an organic sheet or blanket before putting him or her in the bassinet provides an even more secure and comfortable feeling.
Finding Organic Bassinets
There are many specialty stores online and off that sell organic and naturally produced bassinets and other baby bedding. The most popular model of organic bassinet is the Moses basket, designed after the reed baskets used in ancient times. There are many variations of the theme available online:
Check with the seller or manufacturer to ensure that these products are indeed organic and produced in a sustainable fashion.
Organics for Baby
Choosing organic products for your children, from the bedding they sleep on to the clothes they wear and the food they eat, is a really good idea for their health as well as the health of the planet.
Limiting exposure to pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals as much as you can makes a lot of sense and may help protect your children against future illnesses.
It's also a big help to the planet because as more people choose organics, more farmers and producers will offer these products, meaning fewer chemicals are being sprayed on the land, bringing better health to the planet as a whole.
Even better, as more people choose organics for their children and themselves, the price of these products will begin to go down. Right now, most organic products cost more than their conventionally produced counterparts. As the organic trend continues, however, it's likely we'll see prices drop so that organics are as competitively priced as those items that are made with chemicals.
