Practicing Safe Pest Control

With all the chemicals and toxins that seep into the ground on a daily basis, it really isn't necessary to add harmful pesticides and herbicides to that mix. This is especially true if you have small children and pets that play in your yard.

Just because you aren't using these harmful chemicals doesn't mean you have to put up with pesky, disease carrying mosquitoes, or other bothersome bugs ruining your garden. Here are some do it yourself organic pest control methods for garden and yard pests.

Companion Planting

This is by far, one of the best methods to control bugs in your lawn and garden. Certain types of plants actually thrive off each other and not only that, some companion plants help to keep the bugs off the fruits and vegetables in your garden.

Ants

To keep ants out of your garden, especially the leaf eating types, plant some of the herbs and plants listed below. Many of these plants can also be placed around your home, in flowerbeds for example, to keep the ants away:

  • Spearmint
  • Peppermint
  • Tansy
  • Onion

Aphids

If there aren't enough ladybugs (a natural predator of the Aphid) in your area to keep the Aphid population down, try a few of these companion plants:

  • Sunflowers
  • Oregano
  • Coriander
  • Chives

Ants often “farm” aphids, using them to procure a sweet substance much as farmers will milk a cow. By controlling ants you may also find that the aphid problem is reduced.

Cabbage Worm

To control and prevent the infestation of the Cabbage worm, plant:

  • Tomatoes
  • Thyme

Mosquitoes

Plant the following:

  • Basil
  • Garlic
  • Geranium
  • Lemon Grass

If you aren't the gardening type and just want to keep the bugs away from your family and home, there are many safe, alternative pest sprays that can be made at home.

Do It Yourself Organic Pest Control Sprays

One of the best ways to control pests in your garden is garlic. Bugs of all walks hate the smell and taste of garlic and tend to steer clear. A simple garlic spray on your plants and flowers also keeps the bugs away. Be aware not to overdo it though, too much garlic oil on your plants will have a negative effect and kill off leaves and flower petals. Here's how to make basic garlic spray:

Garlic Spray

  • One garlic bulb
  • One gallon of water
  1. Puree the garlic in a blender with some water.
  2. After all the garlic is pureed, mix it in with the gallon of water.
  3. Let the mixture steep for 24 hours
  4. Strain and pour into a spritzer bottle.

Some people like to add a tablespoon or two of liquid soap to this mixture. Whether you want to add the soap is up to you, but just make sure that it's an organic soap.

Hot Pepper Spray

Use at least 10 hot peppers. These should be the hottest of the pepper family such as, Thai chilies, Habeneros and Cayenne peppers.

  1. Puree in a blender with two cups of water
  2. Mix the pepper blend with two quarts of water
  3. Let the mixture steep for at least 24 hours
  4. Strain and pour into a spritzer bottle

If you're touching these peppers with your hands, be sure to wear gloves. The hot Capsaicin oil is difficult to wash completely off your hands. Your eyes and nose will become extremely irritated if you touch them with your hands that have been handling peppers, even if you think you've washed all the oil off.

Final Words

Do it yourself organic pest control is a safe and effective alternative to poisonous pesticides for controlling the bugs in your lawn and garden. Unfortunately in the past, some home owners have become so obsessed with keeping their lawns pristine that they never thought about the harmful effects pesticides have on the environment. So, the next time you're thinking about calling your local lawn service to spray for bugs, consider how much those chemicals pollute the nearby lakes, streams, ponds and rivers.
