Certified Organic Pet Foods Non GMO

From LoveToKnow Organic

Massive dog food recalls in the 1990s and 2000s and other pet food ingredient scares have large numbers of people turning to certified organic pet foods, non-GMO. Pet foods that are USDA certified can give pet owners more security that they are feeding their animals foods that do not contain harmful additives or byproducts. Note that all organic foods are non-GMO foods since this is one of the USDA requirements for organic certification.

Types of Organic Pet Foods

Most certified organic pet foods non-GMO are [[Organic Dog Food Recipes|dog] and cat foods. This is because both dogs and cats are very popular pets and because they subsist on predominately carnivorous diets. GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, can pose a problem in pet foods as they do in human foods. Modified meat, which can be treated with genes from both animals and plants, can have currently unforeseen health risks. Also, animals that receive hormones, such as rBHT, a popular bovine growth hormone, may be treated with greater doses of antibiotics that can be carried over into the meat.

However, there are also a number of manufacturers that make certified organic foods for other types of pets including:

  • Horses
  • Goats
  • Rabbits
  • Birds
  • Livestock
  • Hamsters

Risks of Conventional Pet Foods

Pet food can be even more risky to consume than typical non-organic meat since meat that is considered 'not suitable for human consumption' is often considered by the Food and Drug Administration to be safe for animals to eat. Pet foods commonly contain the following substances, according to Optimum Choices, an authority in holistic pet care:

  • Bacteria – Bacteria makes its way into the pet food supply because animals that are sick or dying before they reach the slaughterhouse can be used in the food. While processing kills much of the existing bacteria from these animals, it may not kill the endotoxins the bacteria produce.
  • Pesticides – Most commercial pet food contains fillers, such as corn and wheat meals. The plants used to make these fillers are treated with pesticides. If they are too contaminated for use in human food, they are often used in pet food.
  • Mycotoxins – These toxic substances produced by fungi are present in pet foods when their ingredients have not been dried or stored properly. They can be found in many dry dog and cat foods that contain fish meal, wheat meal or corn meal.

Advantages of Certified Organic Pet Foods Non-GMO

Feeding an animal organic food helps to mitigate most of the risks above. This is because organic food cannot contain antibiotics or growth hormones, fillers, preservatives, byproducts or artificial colors or flavors. Animals and plants used in the food cannot have been treated with pesticides or feed genetically modified fertilizers or feed.

Brands of Organic Pet Food

While organic pet food can be considerably more expensive than regular pet food, many think the cost is worth it. Those who would like to purchase this food should consider the following brands:

  • Organix – Castor and Pollux’s line of dog and cat foods contains free range chicken and organic rice, peas and flax seed. They do not contain soy, wheat or corn.
  • Karma – This dog food is certified to be 95% organic. The other 5% is vitamins and minerals that cannot be certified. The bulk of the food is made up of organic free range chicken, brown rice and oats.
  • Newman’s Own – This company makes 95% organic canned foods for both dogs and cats in chicken, turkey, beef and liver flavors. It also makes dry foods and a variety of organic treats.

Warning

Because of the green movement and the greater education of consumers as to what they are feeding their pets, many pet food manufactures are coming out with 'natural' lines of pet food. Note that putting the word natural in the name of the food does not automatically make it sustainable or organic. Some of these natural foods are made in the same factories, and use most of the same ingredients, as their lower priced counterparts.
